Up in the air

After Tulsa we continued route 66 to Kansas. Stopped by at some of the sights as well, one of them being Totem Pole park.

We got a very handy brochure for route 66 in oklahoma area to check all of those sights, which really made it easy! We only drove route 66 in oklahoma and soon as we got to Kansas we changed our direction to Topeka. It was a bit off from our route, but we wanted to go there to see this huff n puff balloon rally and I'm so glad we did! It was like a fair where they had a lot of small booths whith all kinds of food! So we had some delicious corn, funnel cake and looked hot air balloons take off.

There's something very enjoyable to watch those colourful balloons travel up in the air.

After the sunset we got to see a balloon glow as well, where they blinked the fire on the balloons and made a great light show!

Then it was time to head to our next hosts. We were first supposed to stay with this guy through couchsurfing, but he had to cancel. So I then contacted another guy from Topeka who was already traveling himself, but was super kind to ask his friends to accommodate us. So third times the charm and we ended up staying with Tim, Dawn and their son Parker and couldn't have honestly hoped for a better family to stay with.

We had lovely conversations and it felt like we would have known each other longer. We also got answers to many questions we had came up while traveling for few weeks already. Tim also introduce his hobby to us which was flying and so he took us flying with a small airplane. It was amazing and it was definitely a different way to discover the city which we were used to. The scenery was spectacular from up there and got to take control of the plane for a very short time as well.

After that we enjoyed amazing diner with them and got to really relax at their lovely home. It's been sometimes very hard to find good vegetarian food, so it was super nice to cook with them and eat yourself too full. For desert we made some tikkupulla which I guess is kind of Finnish thing. So you make a bun dough, roll it on a stick and cook it then by the fire.

We also learned how common it is to have a gun in many homes in states and we did got to go and try one of those as well (which was a first time for me). Even though I don't support violence at all, I also know that it is always the people who do it and not the weapons.

From there we had to move again and next stop was St. Louis. We got there pretty early so had time to do some exploring at the city. We went to see the St.Louis arch and got to drive on top of it with tram (we had no idea you could actually do it).

We found some cool restaurant as well, where I got some very delicious pestopasta. After that it was time to find our next host's home which happened to be only couple blocks from the main street where we were. He's place was great, but not exactly what I would consider the ideal couchsurfing place. When I'm using couchsurfing I'm looking for to see where people actually live and that way see the real culture, share story's and get a bit deeper picture from the place I am. The place welt a bit more like a hotel than couchsurfing place. Our host was very friendly and generous though and we sure did got a great place to sleep for the night.

From St.Louis we headed early in the morning to Chicago and were very excited about getting to "the windy city".
